Bestselling Author Barbara Gordon to join host Joan Jacobs on “The Light Within Show”

Barbara Gordon, international bestselling author of the memoir I’m Dancing As Fast As I Can, to appear on The Light Within Show with Joan Jacobs on VoiceAmerica’s Radio Network.
Voice America Talk Radio Network, Internet broadcasting pioneer, producing and syndicating online audio and video, today announced that international bestselling author Barbara Gordon will join Joan Jacobs, host of The Light Within radio program on the VoiceAmerica Variety Channel ( www.voiceamericavariety.com) Monday, February 20th, at 10 AM Pacific Time.

Barbara Gordon battled with addiction caused by what she thought was a harmless medicine. She tried to gain back control, only to be misdirected by doctors and lose it all: career, money, boyfriend, and friends. But through her convictions and remarkable strength, she recovered. Hundreds have been inspired by her story, and she hopes to continue to share her knowledge with those who are challenged by the stresses of work, family, and friends; a doctor who has given a questionable diagnosis; or their own or a loved one’s struggle with addiction.

In a relevant, timeless, and inspirational interview Gordon will discuss:
• How her experience challenged the all too common belief that doctors are Gods and we must follow their advice without question
• Insights on listening and valuing the self instead of social norms
• The power of stigma
• The tenuous path from hitting rock-bottom to recovery
• Creating a new model for the doctor-patient relationship

Gordon’s memoir is not an addiction story, but the story of someone overcoming adversity after reaching their darkest point. Gordon had to start over after losing herself completely. She had made a career of questioning people in power, yet when it came to her own personal health, she failed to ask any questions and played the part of the good patient. What we need to learn is that the quick fixes don’t work, and we all must be empowered to take control of our own health and lives. While starting over is challenging, support can be found from all kinds of places.

Barbara Gordon is an international bestselling author. Her memoir, I’m Dancing As Fast As I Can, has become an iconic phrase in the world of addiction and recovery. Selling over 2 million copies, her book has helped and continues to inspire people of all ages, gender and sexual preference. Gordon has appeared numerous times on Oprah, TODAY Show, Good Morning America and many other affiliate talk shows. She has been on the cover of Parade Magazine and featured in the Chicago Tribune, New York Times and Los Angeles Times.

Barbara Gordon is an Emmy-award winning documentary producer who has interviewed and questioned members of the CIA, Kaddafi and other powerful figures. A legendary author, producer and inspirational speaker—Gordon has much to share about empowering people of every generation to ask the tough questions.

Dr. Mahesh Gandhi, Renowned Psychiatrist and Homeopath to join host Joan Jacobs on “The Light Within Show”

Dr. Mahesh Gandhi internationally renowned for his application of homeopathy in treating mental illness to appear on The Light Within Show with Joan Jacobs on VoiceAmerica’s Radio Network.
Phoenix, AZ (PR-Inside) January 30, 2012 -- Voice America Talk Radio Network, Internet broadcasting pioneer, producing and syndicating online audio and video, today announced that internationally acclaimed psychiatrists and homeopath Dr. Mahesh Gandhi will join Joan Jacobs, host of The Light Within radio program on the VoiceAmerica Variety Channel (www.voiceamericavariety.com) Monday, Febuary 6th, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

Dr. Gandhi will share his vast experience in treating psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, addiction and schizophrenia, using homeopathy. He will demonstrate that as in physical conditions, the origin of psychiatric states originates in derangement of the subtle vital force and how homeopathy provides a safe and effective solution for mental illness.

Dr. Gandhi graduated as M.D. (Psychiatry) in Modern Medicine in 1981. With a passion for teaching, he has taught in Hospitals and Medical Colleges for almost 10 years. He has written a book in Psychiatry, which is very popular amongst the undergraduate medical students. He was an Honorary and Head of Psychiatry Department in a prestigious medical college in Bombay, but resigned to pursue an interest in Homoeopathy. He has been very closely associated with Dr. Rajan Sankaran for more than 15 years and as a part of his team has been a speaker in many of Sankaran’s Homeopathy Seminars arranged for Indian and foreign students.

His background in Psychiatry, has provided the opportunity to treat many psychiatric cases. This has given him tremendous insight into the homoeopathic treatment of psychiatry related cases. He is invited internationally to give seminars on this topic in many parts of the world, such as USA, Israel, Australia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Yugoslavia (Serbia), South Africa, New Zealand, Russia, Japan, Spain, Netherlands and Germany. He conducts regular lectures in most of these countries in addition to lecturing in India. He is now in the process of writing a book in Homoeopathy to share some of his experiences, especially in the field of Psychiatry.

As an experienced homoeopath with a specialist allopathic background, Dr. Mahesh Gandhi is in a unique position to bring to bear the insight and knowledge of both fields to help his patients regain full and meaningful lives.

Rules for the Game of Life

The world was moved a few years back when Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott published her bestselling book, If Life is a Game, These are the Rules. It is a simple, but profound rendition of what we can expect on the journey.  Not knowing the simplified rendition of why we are here, and what we can expect can keep us running into the walls we find everywhere in our consciousness. But Carter-Scott’s book provides us with a template for living that will not soon be forgotten once it is absorbed.  And we are going to be talking with her today about these rules for the game of life. So, if you are wondering what the heck is going on—tune in. You are not going to want to miss this exciting and powerful show.

Whosoever will, let him take…

This year, we’ve heard a lot about the bullying of gays and lesbians in schools all over the country. What we don’t hear so much about is the bullying of members of the GLBT population in churches and in Christian communities all across the nation. In fact, the bullying is most often done by people who want to exclude members of the GLBT population based on the erroneous notion that God hates them, or wishes them punished or excluded.  Well, today, we are going to be talking to United Church of Christ minister, Candace Chellew-Hodge, author of “Bulletproof Faith: A Spiritual Survival Guide for Gay and Lesbian Christians.” While far too many still think that the words “Christian” and “Gay” and “Lesbian” are oxymorons, Chellew-Hodge will tell GLBT Christians how to reclaim the authentic self and survive the onslaught of abuse coming from their own communities.  If you fall on either side of this issue, you are not going to miss this show.

The Law of Love

It works just like gravity. The only way to get away from gravity is to go live in outer space, or find yourself an anti-gravity chamber—which, by the way, is being held down by gravity. But once you step out of that chamber, and once you come back down to earth, you are going to become a part of the law of gravity again. And the law of gravity works, even when things are working against it. It just includes itself into the ultimate equation and becomes an integral part of the process. And that is exactly how the law of love works. No matter what you’ve seen, how you’ve been hurt, or what you fear, the law of love is simply including itself into the equation and becoming an integral part of the alchemical process of becoming fully aware of who you are. So, even though we live in the world of duality, our antigravity chamber, that very chamber is being held down by love. Further, everything, absolutely everything ultimately falls down into love. Want to know more? Don’t miss this show.

How to Get into the Flow

So, here’s the question: How do you do it? As I talk to more and more people about the newer and truer version of the law of attraction, this is the question I get asked. That is, after all the questions like: “How can I get a million dollars in the next year,” and “How can I attract my soulmate?”  Those questions are based on the old understanding of the law of attraction, which tells us that all we need to do to attract from the external world all that fulfills internally, is to think positive, do a vision board, and do the work of removing blocks from the unconscious—and then our dreams will come true. That old understanding has us further splitting ourselves in half. But the new understanding, the true understanding unites us with divine Self. So, now that we know that, how do we get into the flow. This show will answer that question.  Don’t miss it.

Authentic Relationship

mathewsOkay, so we’ve spent a lot of time here on the Authentic Living Show talking about the Authentic Self, how to access and live out of it. But we’ve spent less time talking about relationships, particularly authentic relationships. Well, the time and the book have arrived, allowing us to really explore what it means to attract, achieve and maintain an authentic relationship. Our guest today is Sarah Abell, author of the book Authentic Relationships From the Inside Out. She is a relationship expert from across the pond in England. Sarah started out her career as a News Reporter for the BBC, and later became a freelance writer and an educator in the area of relationships. She has written material for courses and resources used to work with individuals, couples and families. Authentic relationships are not your run of the mill relationships—they are the real deal.  So if you are wondering how to create, establish or maintain an authentic relationship—you are not going to want to miss this.

Your Soul’s Desire

Have you ever experienced a deep longing of which the manifestation just seemed to keep eluding you? In this day and age in which many of us are vision boarding and affirming our little hind ends off trying to manifest these longings, we tend to judge ourselves for our inability to come home to these seeming soul desires.  But understanding a soul desire and distinguishing it from all the other things that can mimic soul desire is an inner and heroic journey. If, for example, we can start the sentence with “I’ve always wanted to…” that desire could be a soul desire, or it could be a desire that comes from the need to avoid some pain, or escape some seemingly more difficult reality, or to bargain with the so-called fates.  So, how do we go about the process of manifesting soul desire if we aren’t even sure what soul desire is? Well, the first process is going to have to be getting to know ourselves at the level of the soul.  Want to know more? Tune in—it could change your life.

Home for the Holidays

What a beautiful time of year to enjoy family and friends. Unfortunately, along with the excitement of planning, comes two unwanted crashers – stress & depression. It is a very easy time of year to slip into bad habits & yes – turn to addictions. Please join us this Thursday, December 23, 2010, or anytime after for replay, with Dr. Hal Urschel – addiction recovery psychiatrist. This will be Dr. Urschel’s third time with us on the show. If you missed Dr. Urschel’s first two shows with us – please go and listen! September 2 on drug & alcohol addiction recovery and October 28 on smoking cessation.

Overindulgence seems to be the theme for holiday stress reduction – which we know logically is the very worse possible response – because it leads to further stress. The response of overindulgence is even more dangerous for the addict. The role of the loved one is to make sure that any addict stays focused on recovery. Dr. Urschel is going to guide us  as to how we can help with this very challenging task.

Dr. Urschel has shared with us before – the top lifestyle killers out there are smoking & alcohol. The tragic part is – most of these addictions go untreated – and they are very treatable! And then…we have the ultimate ticking holiday atomic bomb – drinking and driving. According to Dr. Urschel:

  1. More people drink during the holidays due to numerous parties and other festivities.
  2. Many holiday drinkers don’t drink often, so they have a lower alcohol tolerance. These people often underestimate their level of impairment and sometimes even drive when they shouldn’t. When arrested for drunk driving, these people often show a relatively low blood alcohol content yet they are very intoxicated.
  3. Problem drinkers and alcoholics love the holidays because there are more social occasions to drink. They say they feel more “normal” because the occasional drinkers are also more likely to abuse alcohol during this time of year. Consequently, people with alcoholism drink and drive more frequently. Unlike occasional drinkers, they have a high tolerance for alcohol and can consume large amounts before showing effects.
  4. The holidays are busy and stressful. People are hurrying more than normal and winter road conditions make driving more dangerous. Add alcohol to this scenario and you have a recipe for disaster.

Cigarette smoking, drugs & alcohol are all physiological addictions. They must be treated this way otherwise recovery is tenuous at best. Dr. Urschel will share with us all the new hope we have for addicts & their families.

1.  We now have a shot to treat alcoholism. It lasts for 30 days and during that time you can’t get drunk on it.
2.  Also, we have a truly miraculous medication to treat heroin and prescription pain pill addiction.
3.  We also have a revolutionary treatment to treat methamphetamine and cocaine addiction, now.

Unfortunately denial is the chosen treatment option for most addicts & their family. Clearly we know – this is a deadly option – not just for the addict but often for innocent victims. As I always say – there is NO BETTER WAY TO SHOW LOVE for someone than to contribute to their health. When you save an addict – you are also saving who knows how many other people – loved ones  & innocent people who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Please assure that anyone you know with addictions, or their families – listen to Dr. Urschel.

All the best for a happy, HEALTHY holiday season.

And…my wish for you, as always….May you get at least 60 minutes of exercise today!

My Thanksgiving Prayers for You

Due to the enormous response to the stop smoking show with Dr. Hal Urschel in October, I have chosen to re air that spectacularly successful show on Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 25, 2010.

The listenership  numbers were truly awesome for that show. If you missed it you may listen any time in the archives (October 28 show) or listen live with loved ones on Thanksgiving. As I always say, there is no better way to show true love for another than by caring for their health. The #1 way you can care about someone’s health is to get them to stop smoking. True love & friendship is not about going out for expensive dinners & being drinking buddies. Let’s get over the  superficial definition of friendship. Once again:

Smoking is the #1 Lifestyle killer out there.

It contributes to the demise of every organ system in the body. It doesn’t matter if you are not overweight, eat healthy….you are still destroying your health by smoking and killing others with the second hand smoke. You are not being responsible for your family by smoking.

Look, I get it. As I always say I am very  blessed I never started smoking, so I do not have to quit smoking. Dr. Urschel provides you with the ways to quit smoking – as he calls it – the comprehensive approach to quitting smoking. Smoking is a physiological addiction – and not treating it that way is setting yourself up for frustration and failure. You know you are going to have to stop smoking – or if its not you and you have someone you love who smokes – quit procrastinating – the smoking has to stop.

I believe Thanksgiving is a profound time to re air this show. Are we truly thankful for this beautiful country we have? Take a look around – we have a great thing going. However, with all of the health epidemics – smoking, obesity & diabetes – I believe we are not learning from our dinosaur friends. Go to my site and check out my favorite Gary Larson cartoon.

http://www.fitfan4fun.com/FitFan4Fun/Pictures_say_it_so_much_better%21.html

All of these lifestyle killers are very controllable – but too many have become immune to our pleas of living a healthier lifestyle. I know it is hard to lose weight & stop smoking. But you have to always remember keep your eye on the goal. Once you start seeing that fat dwindling away – that becomes your reward and incentive for your hard work. Ask someone who has stopped smoking and they tell you how great it feels to wake up and breathe! How great it feels to ditch that smokers cough!

Look, your family needs you. Nobody wants to live a miserable incapacitated life or die a few decades earlier – if you do see a psychiatrist. BTW – Dr. Urschel is a psychiatrist.  As my BELOVED, Dr. Holly Andersen, America’s #1 cardiologist said on my show in August

http://www.voiceamerica.com/voiceamerica/vepisode.aspx?aid=47998

“Are you going to partner with me or not?” These are her words to her  smoking patients coming to her for help with their Cardio Vascular Disease.

Traditional Thanksgiving was not about smoking, drinking beer & watching football games. Thanksgiving was about physical activity (the harvest) & eating wholesome pure foods. It was not about that carcinogenic turkey fryer  & drowning our foods in sugary sauces & trans fats.  How bout go out an PLAY that football game with your family and friends, make a commitment to stop smoking, and make a healthy Thanksgiving dinner. Email me for ideas if you wish. And of course, listen to my show with Dr. urschel on VoiceAmerica.  BTW, Dr. Urschel will be back on December 23 about making it through the holiday season, resolutions & ways to overcome physiological addictions.

And right from our Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin, on her website:

“Americans will be more likely to change their behavior if they have a meaningful reward–something more than just reaching a certain weight or dress size. The real reward is invigorating, energizing, joyous health. It is a level of health that allows people to embrace each day and live their lives to the fullest without disease or disability.”

All of the fantastic researchers & doctors who have been on my show urge us all to find ways to live a healthier lifestyle. These are unnecessary epidemics. Please, let’s truly give thanks on Thanksgiving by making a commitment stop smoking, eat healthy, exercise, & appreciate our beautiful country.

My wish for you today, and every day…

May you get at least 60 minutes of exercise!
