Food For Thought

Food is nourishment, we bond over food, food is an integral part of relationships & sensuality.

Please join me on Thursday Jan 13, 2011 on Fitfan4fun…Lifestyle Fitness with Shira Litwack as my very lovely guest Brooke Parkhurst of Just Married & Cooking.

Unknowingly to many, food is a huge influence in our lives, and a major factor in our relationships. My relationship mantra: There is no better way to show love for another than by caring for their health. Ensuring we get proper nutrition is at the very core of our health. As a couple – it is key we have food harmony – a mutual respect for healthy food & eating habits – this is what we will pass to our children. However, food is a major factor in relationship discord.  Food choices are often a battle of  ”my way is right yours is wrong”. When a loved one does not beckon to our ways, we take it personally and feel rejected.

Let’s be real honest here – food & love are like a bicycle built for two. Where one goes, so does the other. We have an innate quest for both food and love to satiate our appetite. The Bible compares sex to a forbidden fruit. When we break up with a boy friend we hit the Haagen Daz.  Whenever we get together with loved ones we eat. Just as if there is discord in the boudoir – if there  are food fights – it will wreak havoc and infiltrate so many other aspects of your relationship. Perfect breeding ground for nit picking – a guaranteed, viral saboteur.  Kitchen kinship is as influential on a relationship as being bedroom buddies.

Brooke Parkhurt & James Briscione of Just Married & Cooking bring a very couples oriented fun to the kitchen. To adopt a great lifestyle habit – it has to be fun or we just wont do it long term.  James is a Chef-instructor at The Institute of Culinary Education, a former sous chef in Restaurant Daniel’s private dining room, and the first-ever two-time winner of The Food Network series “Chopped.” Brooke pens an online food column, “Full Plate,” for the New York Daily News.  Together with James, she teaches a series of sell-out couples cooking classes at the Institute of Culinary Education. Let Brooke show us how teaming up in the kitchen and making healthy, delectable meals is a fun, bonding aspect of their relationship.

Brooke and James’s Just Married & Cooking will be released in May, 2011and is an indispensable cookbook and entertaining guide (with a Southern accent) for the newly married and kitchen challenged.

Nutrition and Exercise in Harmony

Please join me once again with the  fabulous Fabio Comana,  on Fitfan4fun…Lifestyle Fitness with ME, Shira Litwack, Thursday December 2, 2010, 10:00 a.m. Pacific. Fabio is an exercise physiologist with the American Council on Exercise – ACE.

Fabio was with us in October, and we discussed effective exercise strategies for fat loss. For any exercise program to work, proper nutrition is a must. I always say diet and exercise are the greatest love affair of all time, one just can’t live without the other. This is an affair, we all need to have. Unfortunately, too many are missing out on this healthy relationship.

Here we are heading into December. Time for the resolution thing. Do you know what the #1 New Years’ resolutions are? Stop smoking and lose weight. Hmmmmm……how are we going to be different this year?  Let Fabio & I help you reach your goals.

Diet & exercise are at the core of absolutely every aspect of your health. Fabio & I will be providing you with simple, easy to follow strategies for making the right food choices – and when combined with an effective exercise program -surrounded by some new healthy lifestyle habits – you will reach your goals. There are many insidious saboteurs  out there – falling for marketing rhetoric on the labels,  falling prey to fad diets, not understanding nutritional information….these are some of the points Fabio & I will clarify.

We will also be discussing the importance of understanding our metabolism. Many commit crimes against our metabolism daily and have no clue. Your nutrition and physical activity are critical to keeping your metabolism purring. We are not helpless victims, there is plenty we can do. It doesn’t matter how many yo yo diets have deflated your dreams….it is possible to lose weight and get fit at any age. Please let Fabio & I help you.

And for those of you who just can’t stop smoking……You can’t fool me. One of the many reasons people don’t stop smoking is the fear of gaining weight. Yes, many people do gain weight with smoking cessation. And yes, quitting smoking does stir up some metabolic mayhem. However, Fabio & I will be discussing ways we can help you through that tough time as well. You know you have to stop smoking…the longer you wait, the more irreversible damage you can cause to your body. It doesn’t matter how thin you are….if you are destroying your health. Smoking is NOT an acceptable stay thin strategy.

Fabio and I will help you work with yourself, not against. Remember, you are not getting fit just for yourself. You are a role model to your children. Your family needs you. As I always quote the CDC – Center for Disease Control – 75% of chronic illnesses have a MAJOR lifestyle factor. Let Fabio & I help you reach your fitness goals, so you are NOT part of that 75%. Be a great model for your family, love strutting your stuff, truly learn how to enjoy life. 2011 will be your year!

My wish for you today, and every day….

May you get at least 60 minutes of exercise!

Understanding The ND & The MD

Dr. Carolyn Dean, both a Naturopathic Doctor & a Medical Doctor will be sharing her very unique perspective on healthcare on Fitfan4fun….Lifestyle Fitness with Shira Litwack on VoiceAmerica Thursday, November 18 2010.

Dr. Dean has been in the forefront of the natural medicine  revolution for over 30 yrs. She has authored/coauthored over 20 health books. Every show is about living a healthy, proactive lifestyle. Dr. Dean is a fierce advocate for teaching people to take charge of their health.

Allopathic medicine is the medical practice which treats disease by the use of remedies which produce effects different from those produced by the disease under treatment. This is usually done with medication or surgery.  MDs practice allopathic medicine.  Naturopathic medicine focuses on natural remedies and the body’s vital ability to heal and maintain itself. Naturopathic philosophy favors a holistic approach and minimal use of surgery & medication. And –  naturopathy should not be about prescribing supplements. It is an approach of living a healthy lifestyle & listening to your body and what it is telling you.  Dr. Dean will help us understand the role of both in our lives.

A patient’s view of the role of a doctor is to help them stay well – reassure us that we are healthy & well & we are going to stay healthy.  A doctor’s view is that they are trained to diagnose disease, treat disease – usually with medication and is a very hospital based practice. And yes, this is frustrating to many doctors that the system has to be this way. Every fantastic doctor on my show has told us that many of their patients would not be patients if they had chosen to live a more proactive, health centric lifestyle.  As Dr. Dean appropriately says – preventative allopathic medicine is often about going for the mammogram and CT scan.  We have to train people and give them the tools to live a healthy lifestyle. We need to take much more responsibility for prevention of disease.

As this is also our Thanksgiving show, Dr. Dean & I will be discussing creating healthy Thanksgiving traditions. The true meaning of Thanksgiving is sharing special times with our families and loved ones. As I always say, there is no better way to show love for another than to care for their health. Show love on Thanksgiving by creating a healthy Thanksgiving dinner. Dr. Dean and I will be sharing healthy Thanksgiving recipes, that will surely earn their place in the family cookbook.

And BTW, May you get AT LEAST 60 minutes of Exercise Today!

Backyard Sportsman Features Hunter Ethics, Fitness and Italian Cooking on Sept. 24

Pasta sauces from and other dishes from ground deer will be featured in the cooking section.

Hunter ethics seem to come into play with a hunter thinks that someone else has violated them.  On this show Backyard Sportsman Host, Hovey Smith, discusses 12 ethical issues related to hunting that most frequently get hunters into conflict with their fellow hunters, landowners and the law. These issues involve things related to himself, his family, his fellow hunters, the game and society in general.

One ethical issue, being physically fit enough to safely do a hunt is discussed with Guest Dennis Cecil who is the editor of Hunting Fitness Magazine. Cecil and Hovey discuss fitness programs for all age hunters and how to safely approach them.

Today’s Outdoor Business Module 7  discusses how to evaluate your competition, discover where it is and how to evaluate it. This process will help you come to a decision if this market could reasonably sustain your new business and if you are likely to make money operating it.

Putting an end to our Obesogenic Society

Join us Thursday September 9 with Dr. Glenn Berall chief of Pediatrics North York General Hospital Toronto, Canada.  Dr. Berall lectures worldwide on the childhood obesity epidemic. Our society created it – now we have to fix it. Our children’s generation is the first generation since the civil war with a shorter life expectancy than the one before – thanks to childhood obesity and its complications & implications. Let’s create healthy traditions for our kids & stop the travesty. We are going to delve into the problem and provide  pertinent answers to help parents deal with this situation. Our children have horrible eating habits and with all the techno toys – this generation redefines sedentary. Parenthood is NOT a popularity contest. We have to model ourselves good lifestyle habits for our kids and take responsibility and action as a parent. Diabetes and heart disease are no longer diseases of the over 40 crowd. Our children are assured a life of medical challenges if we do not work now to end this tragic & very unnecessary epidemic.

All about Hunting and Eating Squirrels??

Squirrel stew, the result of a successful hunt and several hours cooking

As a child of rural Georgia, I grew up hunting, cleaning and eating  squirrels; but many in the world to not share my favorable opinion of eating “tree rats,.” as they are commonly called in England and Ireland.

To their later regret, the English imported many animals into their home islands during the long days of the British Empire, and many found the islands to their considerable liking. Not only did these include squirrels from North America, but also small Asian deer among many other species.
Like Samual Johnson, I have a “modest proposal” to solve an overpopulation problem. Eat them. We hunt and eat squirrels quite happily in the U.S. and they do make a good meal, although somewhat troublesome to skin, clean and cook. Properly prepared, squirrels have a sweet-tasting meat that goes well in a stew that also contains corn, tomatoes, butter beans and always onions. Some add a bit of vinegar or hot sauce to give it a bit of a zip. However, it is very easy to overdo the hot sauce and hot pepper.

The S. American Nutria is an import into the U.S. which causes problem with water-control structures

If anything besides the stew were to be served, rice and less commonly grits would be an accompanyment along with fried corn bread or a corn-meal  muffin and usually iced tea. I would have no problem serving this to the Queen or anyone else. There is even a squirrel-based Brunswick stew, that some assert originated in Brunswick County, Viriginia, to provide an admittedly weak connection to British nobility.

The August 20 show of The Backyard Sportsman, featuring Hovey Smith as host, will feature an entire hour on hunting, cleaning and cooking squirrels. Not only will the familure gray squirrel be discussed but other tree squirrels such as the western gray, fox, Albert, red and flying squirrels of North America and elswhere.
A diverse selection of hunting methods and hunting tools will be discussed.
