Sex In Our Cities recently debunked the myth that hormonal change only occurs in women. Clinicians have known for decades that men experience an androgen deficiency as they age, which is very similar to menopause in women. Men’s testosterone levels gradually decline throughout adulthood—approximately 1 percent per year after age 30. Dona explained that this loss of testosterone affects many aspects of life such as energy, muscle mass, and sexual function.
Dona presented “MAN-opause—Myth or Reality?” at the North Carolina Nurse Practitioners Spring Symposium in Pinehurst, N.C. on March 29. Both presentations were well-received. It is apparent that clinicians and the lay public are unaware of this hormonal transition. Dona’s expertise created awareness about MAN-opause and gave listeners strategies to enhance their life beyond the transition.
