Looking At The Differences Between Normal Grief and Depression

John Christensen has been a licensed marriage and family therapist in Brigham City, Utah for over thirty years. In 1987 his daughter’s Carrie, age 16, and Sarah age 14, were killed in the car train accident. Again in 1993, the unthinkable happened, when his daughter, Robin, age 16 died of Meningitis. John along with his wife LouAnn and another couple-the Handy's, whose daughter died in the same car-train accident, started a support group for parents who had lost children, which eventually led to our initiating a local chapter of the compassionate friends. John and LouAnn have six surviving children. LouAnn is the mayor of Brigham City.

Listen to the Show

Sometimes, making a baby takes more than two people. “Third party” reproduction can involve an egg donor, sperm donor, surrogate, or gestational carrier. To learn more about what happens when two isn’t enough – and how a third party can help – host Kim Hahn talks to Melissa Brisman, attorney at law, who specializes in negotiating contracts for many types of reproductive arrangements including gestational carrier contracts, ovum, sperm and embryo donation contracts.

The Future of Food

Deborah Koons Garcia knows most people don't realize that genetically engineered foods have quietly slipped into much of the American food supply, mostly from corn and canola. They're in an estimated 60 percent of all processed foods. She wants people to understand the risks. Garcia’s film “The Future of Food” questions why the U.S. government hasn't required Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) foods to undergo the rigorous testing required of medicines created by recombinant DNA technology, and why it has resisted efforts to require GMO labeling on foods, as Europe does. Especially, if your child is eating corn and canola, you will find Betsy and Deborah’s discussion very important.
