I just want to tell you that I really enjoyed yesterday's radio show. It's
about time that someone addressed the issues Blacks have with their hair and
learning to swim. Many of us don't go in the water because of our hair and we
prevent our children from going in for the same reason. I think if you did more
discussions around this topic, you'll see more of us in swimming lessons. We
have to feel that there's an easy way to deal with this issue. We need to know
that learning to swim is a wonderful experience. Maybe if you receive enough
responses to revisit this issue, that you could have one of your Black swim
instructors speak to the radio audience.
I took swimming lessons on and off for 7 years. I got so discouraged that I
haven't been in the water for the last 3 years. This month, I'm going back in
the water (after I get my hair braided, of course). You and your radio show
have encouraged me to not give up. Speaking of... I really hate that your radio
show will be ending soon. I knew it was only for a short while, but I hope
there's a way to continue the great discussions.
As a side note, because I can't swim, I made sure that my children can. They
swim like dolphins.

As a kid I often thought it would be cool to be on the radio. But as happens with many kid dreams, that one disappeared along with my desire to play shortstop for the Cleveland Indians. That is until Senior producer Tacy Trump called me and invited me to try hosting a show. Given my very full schedule I very reluctantly agreed to give it a try. Much to my surprise, my show, Turning Hard Times into Good Times has become far more successful than I ever imagined it could be thanks to various factors not the least of which has been the technical and business support of Voice America. I have my own producer and engineers who work me every week in providing a very popular show. Also, the management has been very helpful and flexible in working with me to meet my needs it building up this show which by the way has become a profitable business. Although this is a web based radio business, its just like operating a terrestrial radio show with fewer hassles. So at age 62, I have found a new career that has given me a new lease in life as I approach my golden years. I never did replace Chico Carrasquel at Shortstop for the Cleveland Indians and I think at my age the chances of going to the moon are better of achieving that goal. But the dream of hosting a radio show has come true and it can for you as well if you aspire to it.
